WASHINGTON: The United States (US) Secretary of State will travel Sunday to Ankara to discuss help and assistance following a massive quake.

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said on Wednesday that Antony Blinken will visit Incirlik air base, via which the US has shipped assistance, and then hold meetings in Ankara on “continued US assistance,”.

US-Turkey Ties

The US has sent some 200 rescue workers and also contributed an initial $85 million in relief for Turkey, deploying Chinook helicopters to provide supplies to worst-hit parts of the country.

President Joe Biden had earlier branded the Turkish President as an autocrat. However, Washington sees Turkey as helpful for a mediatory role between Ukraine and Russia. The Biden administration has expressed support for Ankara’s request to buy F-16 jets but the sale is being blocked in US Congress due to concerns over Turkey.

US Secretary of State Blinken is likely to discuss tensions with Turkey when he travels to Athens on Monday as Greece also provides aid to Turkey after earthquake. He will also attend the Munich Security Conference, where the Ukraine conflict and tensions with Beijing will take center stage, and will also visit Turkey’s historic rival Greece.

Media reports suggest that top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi is also likely to visit Munich, offering a chance for a meeting with Blinken. The US Secretary of State had been due to visit this month China but abruptly canceled the trip after the US shot down a Chinese balloon.
