ISLAMABAD: The North American Aerospace Defence Command said Tuesday that Russian warplanes were spotted flying off the coast of Alaska.

This marked the latest incident involving Russian military activity being tracked by the US military near the state.

According to ABC News, the Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) is an area that stretches out 150 miles from US territory, where the US requires aircraft to have their transponders on or to identify themselves.

“This Russian activity in Alaskan ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat,” the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) said in a press release.

There was no NORAD intercept on Monday, the military said, adding that NORAD tracked the aircraft as they flew through the ADIZ without entering US or Canadian airspace.

US territorial airspace and waters begin 12 nautical miles from the coastline.

Several times

According to CBS News, the US military has reported Russian military activity near Alaska several times in recent months.

In December, NORAD said four Russian military aircraft were detected flying close to the state, and the US military said Russian warplanes were detected near Alaska last September when more than 100 US soldiers were deployed temporarily to Alaska’s remote Shemya Island.

That deployment coincided with eight Russian aircraft and four navy vessels, including two submarines, traveling close to Alaska while Russia and China conducted joint military drills.
