BEIJING: US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Saturday that Washington and Beijing should communicate “directly” on issues about specific economic practices, urging greater cooperation between the world’s two biggest economies despite stressful ties.

Janet Yellen is on a four-day trip to Beijing as the US seeks to cool tensions and stress areas of collaboration between the two sides. In her meeting with Vice Premier He Lifeng, she pointed to the record of bilateral trade last year as proof of just how the sides were twined together.

She said that there was ample room for the firms from both sides to engage in trade and investment, adding that both sides should communicate directly to resolve concerns about specific economic practices.

Improving China-US Relations

Vice Premier responded that Beijing regretted that “unexpected incidents” had derailed efforts to improve China-US relations following a meeting between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in November last year.

“There were some problems in the implementation of the consensus reached by the two heads of state,” he said.

But following Janet Yellen’s visit this week and her meeting with Premier Li Qiang on Friday, he added that China would earnestly implement the consensus reached between the two dignitaries to turn it into concrete actions.
