BAGHDAD: A United States (US) warship, stationed in the Red Sea, successfully intercepted numerous attack drones launched from areas controlled by the Huthis in Yemen on Thursday, said the US Central Command.

The USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116) reportedly shot down multiple one-way attack drones during the morning hours of November 23, originating from regions controlled by the Houthi group in Yemen, CENTCOM said on social media platform X.

However, both the ship and its crew remained unharmed, with no reported damage or injuries, it added.

The Huthis have declared themselves as part of an “axis of resistance,” and retaliating against Israel’s brutal with Hamas. The ongoing tensions have heightened concerns in Yemen after the Huthis launched drones and missiles towards Israel since the commencement of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.

On Wednesday, Israel reported intercepting a “cruise missile” aimed at the southern part of the country, a claim proclaimed by the Huthis. Yahia Saree, the spokesman for the Huthis’ armed wing, said on X that their forces targeted various military sites in southern Israel.

The Huthis stated, “We will continue to carry out military operations until the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank stops.” Moreover, the Huthis have threatened to target Israeli shipping and claimed to have seized the Galaxy Leader, an Israel-linked cargo vessel, and its 25 international crew at the entrance to the Red Sea on Sunday.

Israel’s military described the seizure as a “very grave incident of global consequence,” and a US military official stated it was “a flagrant violation of international law.”

On Wednesday, Israel and Hamas announced a four-day ceasefire with plans for a hostage and prisoner swap.

More than 14,000 people, two thirds of them women and children, have been killed in the Israeli relentless airstrikes and grounds offensive since October 7. According to reports, one third of the civilian buildings in Gaza Strip have either fully destroyed or partially damaged in Israel’s airstrikes.
