Uzbek President Visits Tehran

TEHRAN: Iran has the ability to easily link Uzbekistan to international waters via Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei said.  He made the remarks during a meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tehran on Sunday.

In the meeting, he pointed to the historical and cultural ties between Iran and Uzbekistan. Ayatollah Khamenei expressed happiness to enhance the relations between the two sides after a long pause.  He hoped that Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to Iran would be the start of a better future in ties between the two sides. Ayatollah Khamenei said that the two sides should cooperate in the fields of trade, transport, science, and technology.

On the occasion, Mirziyoyev termed his meeting with Iran’s top Leader as historic and said that “We also regret the gap in the ties between the two nations and the decline in cooperation. He hoped that talks in Tehran will provide an opportunity to improve cooperation in transport, science, technology and tourism.” The Iranian President was also present at the meeting.

The Uzbek president landed in Tehran on Sunday along with a high-ranking political-economic delegation. He also held a meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and attended the meeting of a top-level commission between the two countries in Tehran.
