Uzbekistan Completes $2 Billion Solar, Wind Power Plants

TASHKENT: Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, in collaboration with international partners, participated in the formal commissioning of five solar and one wind power plant across six regions of the country.

The event, attended by prominent figures including from Masdar, China Energy Engineering Corporation, China Energy International Group, SEPCO III, and Dongfang Electric Corporation, marked a significant milestone in Uzbekistan’s renewable energy initiatives.

President Mirziyoyev, addressing the public, highlighted that the projects, valued at $2 billion, would provide uninterrupted electricity access to 2 million households. He said that the completion of these plants would save 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas and contribute to industrial production and services worth $4 billion.

The president acknowledged the positive environment for private sector and foreign company involvement in the country’s renewable energy sector. The solar power plants in Karmana and Nurabad districts, with a combined capacity of 200 MW, were commissioned through foreign direct investment and public-private partnership models, generating 1 billion kWh of green energy.

Uzbekistan’s Vision for 27 GW Green Power by 2030

Mirziyoyev outlined the nation’s future plans for green energy development, with ongoing projects for 22 solar and wind power plants totaling 9 GW. The goal is to increase the capacity of green power plants to 27 GW by 2030, leading to significant gas savings and a substantial reduction in harmful emissions.

Masdar, an Emirati company, completed three solar photovoltaic plants with a total capacity of 900 MW in the Jizzakh, Samarkand, and Surkhandarya regions. Additionally, the first stage of a 500 MW wind farm in the Tamdyn district of the Navoi region was successfully constructed.

Furthermore, the Chinese Gezhouba Group contributed to the completion of two solar stations with a combined capacity of 1,000 MW in the Bukhara and Kashkadarya regions in a remarkable nine-month timeframe.
