Uzbekistan Hosts CMS COP14 Opening Ceremony

SAMARKAND: The 14th meeting of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP14) started at the Silk Road Samarkand Congress Hall in Samarkand, inaugurated by Uzbekistan’s Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov.

He conveyed a message from President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, emphasizing Uzbekistan’s commitment to wildlife conservation, stating that the country is prepared to utilize its resources to safeguard migratory animal species during its presidency of the Convention from 2024 to 2027.

With over 1,800 delegates from 130 nations are participating, the conference aims to address crucial issues surrounding the conservation of migratory wildlife species. 

The agenda for the week-long negotiations encompasses diverse topics, including amendments to the CMS appendices to extend protection to 14 additional species, such as the Eurasian Lynx and the Saker Falcon, proposals for priority conservation measures for seven species, strategies to combat poaching, initiatives for ecological connectivity, and the formulation of a new strategic plan for migratory species spanning from 2024 to 2032.
