CARACAS, Venezuela: Edmundo Gonzalez, the opposition candidate who contested against President Nicolas Maduro in the July elections, has left Venezuela, as announced by Vice President Delcy Rodriguez.

Gonzalez had been seeking asylum in the Spanish embassy in Caracas, following the contentious election results that led to widespread protests and claims of electoral fraud by opposition supporters.

Rodriguez’s announcement, posted on Instagram, stated that Gonzalez had exited the Spanish embassy and subsequently left the country. This move marks a significant development in Venezuela’s ongoing political crisis, where opposition leaders frequently face persecution, arrest, or forced exile.

The departure of Gonzalez further underlines the intense political repression faced by opposition figures in Venezuela, reflecting the challenges to political dissent under Maduro’s administration. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing debates about Venezuela’s political future and international calls for a fair and transparent political process.
