ISLAMABAD: The upgraded account verification program from Twitter has now been implemented. Every account had a blue tick before this update; however, some accounts have now changed to gold, and more will soon turn grey.

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO, made the statement last month on the microblogging site, writing, “Sorry for the delay, we’re tentatively launching Verified on Friday next week.”

“Gold checks for businesses, grey checks for the government, blue checks for people (celebrity or not), and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before the check activates,” the Tesla owner continued.

A gold checkmark will take the place of the “official” designation on some business accounts on Twitter, according to an announcement from the website.

In the near future, a grey checkmark for government and multilateral accounts will also be added, according to the statement. Musk has mentioned using different colors for different organizations and people in previous tweets, but he didn’t go into more detail until recently.

The definition of what is “notable” is too subjective, so all verified individual humans will have the same blue check, he tweeted.

Blue checkmark on Twitter accounts

The blue checkmark can mean one of two things: either a user has an active subscription to Twitter Blue, the company’s new subscription, or their account has been verified by Twitter’s previous verification standards (active, notable, and authentic).

For accounts that receive the blue checkmark as part of a Twitter Blue subscription, the active, notable, and legitimate criteria used in the previous process will not be considered.

According to Twitter, “The gold checkmark denotes that the account is an official company account under Twitter Blue for Business.”

The term “official profile” is used to describe elected or appointed officials, government accounts (institutional accounts and multilateral organizations), some political organizations such as political parties, major brands, commercial companies including business partners, media outlets and publishers, and some other public figures.

Users can learn more about the accounts managed by particular state-affiliated media organizations and those closely associated with those organizations by looking at the labels on state-affiliated profiles.

Accounts from the major countries where Twitter is active that are very involved in geopolitics and diplomacy are given government labels.

“These labels also state whether the account is run by a government representative or a state-affiliated media organization, as well as the nation with which it is associated. The account’s status as a government account or a platform for state-affiliated media is also indicated by a small flag icon,” said the social media platform.
