BEIJING: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said that all parties should protect people’s right to survival and development as a priority. He was discussing Israel’s offensive on Gaza through video at a high-level segment of the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The top diplomat stated that “it falls upon the entire world to protect the human rights of all groups and all people in a fair, equal, and effective manner,” noting that the current offensive by the Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has resulted in the deaths of about 30,000 civilians and the displacement of more than two million people.

Wang Yi said that they must uphold justice and fairness, stand against attempts to use human rights as a pretext to interfere with other nations’ domestic affairs, oppose actions of power politics and hegemony, and also rejected the practice of dual standards.

“We should pursue cooperation that benefits everyone. Consensus must be built via dialogue and mutual learning enhanced via exchanges,” the Chinese FM maintained.

Yi also emphasized that countries must not force their own ideologies on other people, much less form small blocs and align against those with different point of views.

The minister said that China actively takes part in the administration of human rights across the world as a responsible “big country” and has assisted to conclude several important global human rights conventions and treaties.
