SYDNEY: Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald suggested that rather than a direct replacement for David Warner, reshuffling the batting order to accommodate Cameron Green might be the approach.

While Green might not immediately feature in the upcoming Pakistan series, McDonald emphasized his exceptional talent and the likelihood of his return to the squad soon.

The potential for Warner’s retirement in January could create the first opening, with options like Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, or Matt Renshaw initially considered. However, McDonald hinted at the possibility of restructuring the top order, drawing parallels to past instances in Australian cricket where players shifted roles successfully.

He highlighted Green’s adaptability, noting his success at different batting positions in domestic cricket and the potential to adjust the lineup to accommodate the best six batters in a suitable order. McDonald also discussed potential changes in the batting order, such as Marnus Labuschagne moving up and Steven Smith returning to No. 3, or even considering Travis Head’s promotion.

The decision, however, is expected to materialize closer to the first Test against West Indies. Warner’s farewell series against Pakistan is anticipated, pending final squad confirmation, with performance remaining a key selection criterion despite his illustrious multiformat career.
