Washing of Kaaba

MAKKAH: The lower part of Kiswa is lowered and preparations are underway for washing of Kaaba. The practice is done with the start of Muslim Calander Year following Prophet’s tradition (Sunnah). Saudi Arabia’s General Presidency carries out the duties in holy mosques at Makkah and Madina.

A virtual exhibition was also held to display the tools used in carrying out the task which is quite an experience for the worshippers. A specialist team undertakes the task involving removal of golden rings which fastens Kiswa to the Kaaba. The old cover is removed by letting it drop underneath the new one.

More than 100 skilled craftsmen perform this scared duty and the 56 piece hand embroidered Kiswa. One piece of this hand embroidered Kiswa takes 60 to 120 days to complete and in preparing this cloth over 120 kilograms of gold thread and 100 kilograms of silver is used.
