WASHINGTON: The US State Department has said that it has no intention of easing sanctions or normalizing ties with interim Taliban authorities in Afghanistan until Kabul improves the grim human rights situation in the war-hit country, local media reported on Tuesday.
According to VOA, a State Department spokesperson said that the US’ firm stance is that there will be no steps toward normalization of ties unless basic rights of all people in Afghanistan are upheld.
The US Department’s statements follow the release of a new UN assessment that recommends careful normalization and increased global engagement with Afghanistan’s interim authorities.
Washington Firm on Afghan Taliban Sanctions
The assessment, submitted to the UNSC last week, suggests an expansion of global help, permitting for more development aid, and cooperation. It also highlights the need for more engagement to occur “in a more coordinated, coherent, and structured way.”
Taliban’ has not been permitted to take up Afghanistan’s seat at the UN. Several leaders of Afghan Taliban confront travel restrictions because of UN sanctions.
Economic and financial sanctions imposed on Afghan Taliban entities by the European Union (EU) and the United States (US), have impacted the Afghan economy, worsening extreme poverty in the country.
