MELBOURNE: Former cricketing legend Wasim Akram has called for increased support for Pakistan’s sporting talent, emphasizing the need for better facilities and nurturing to enable young athletes to excel on the global stage.

Speaking to the media in Melbourne, Wasim Akram praised Arshad Nadeem for his impressive performance at the Paris Olympics, highlighting his dedication and hard work as key factors behind his success.

Wasim Akram, renowned for his illustrious career as a fast bowler, commended Nadeem for making Pakistan proud and noted that his achievements have garnered global admiration. “Arshad Nadeem has stunned the world with his remarkable performance, and it’s clear that Pakistan is brimming with talent,” Wasim Akram said. “However, the lack of adequate facilities to identify and develop this talent remains a significant issue.”

The cricketing icon pointed out that Arshad Nadeem’s success underscores the potential that exists within Pakistan, suggesting that with proper support and resources, the country’s athletes could outshine their competitors worldwide. “Nadeem’s victory is a beacon of hope that, with the right nurturing, Pakistan’s latent talent can achieve greatness,” he added.

Wasim Akram stressed the collective responsibility of sports organizations to collaborate in securing funding and providing essential infrastructure, such as stadiums and training facilities, to aspiring sports stars.

“It is crucial for sports organizations to come together to find ways to channel funds and create the necessary facilities for our future stars,” he said. He warned that without proper guidance, young people might end up wasting time on distractions like mobile phones instead of focusing on their athletic pursuits.

Wasim Akram also praised Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, describing him as a “thorough professional.” He noted the shared message from the mothers of both Nadeem and Chopra, emphasizing that sports transcend politics and unite people through common interests.

Regarding the future of cricket in the Olympics, Wasim Akram expressed optimism, saying that the sport could be included in the Games, potentially as a 20-over format. “Cricket should be an integral part of the Olympics. If breakdancing can be included, why not cricket?” he said.

Wasim Akram expressed pride in Pakistan hosting the Champions Trophy next year and welcomed the efforts by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi to upgrade stadiums. He underscored the importance of providing cricket fans with a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
