Wealth of Pakistani Lawmakers Nearly Doubled in 2015-19: Report

ISLAMABAD: Assets of Pakistani lawmakers nearly doubled from 2015 to 2019, increasing by a whopping 85 percent during the five-year time period, reported a private media house citing financial records submitted to the Federal Board of Revenue, the Election Commission of Pakistan and other departments.

All 1,170 members of parliament – including both the upper and lower houses as well as those in the provincial assemblies – had assets worth approximately Rs49 billion in 2015; however, their collective wealth had surged to approximately Rs91 billion by 2019-20, said the report.

The wealth of the MPs also included assets of their family members who were dependent on them.

Wealth of 25 MPs over a billion, 71 had over Rs500m

The report also said that as per the 2014-19 financial records of lawmakers of different political parties, around 25 MPs were declared billionaires, while 71 MPs had assets worth over Rs500 million each.

The report said that lawmakers collectively owned wealth and assets worth Rs79.8 billion during the tax year 2018-19, which increased by Rs12 billion or 15 percent to Rs91 billion in 2019-20, noting an average increase of Rs10 million in the wealth of each lawmaker.
