West Indies Beat Papua New Guinea in T20 World Cup 2024

PROVIDENCE:  Roston Chase played a blistering 42-run knock under pressure and led co-host West Indies to a hard-fought five-wicket victory over Papa New Guinea (PNG) in the second match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at Guyana on Sunday.

Led by a stellar performance from Roston Chase, the West Indies overcame a spirited challenge from PNG to emerge victorious by five wickets.

Facing a low target set by PNG, the West Indies batters achieved the 138-run target with one over to spare.

Roston Chase emerged as the hero for the West Indies, delivering a crucial 42-run innings off 27 balls, steering his team to victory. Supported by Brandon King’s steady 34 runs from 29 deliveries, Chase ensured his team’s triumph in the tournament opener.

Earlier, put into bat first, PNG faced early setbacks, losing two wickets for just seven runs within the first three overs. Despite the shaky start, Sese Bau’s half-century and valuable contributions from other batsmen guided PNG to a total of 137 runs in 20 overs.

Bau led the charge for PNG with 50 runs off 43 balls, including six fours and a six, before being dismissed in the latter stages of the innings. Supported by Charles Amini and Kiplin Doriga, who scored 12 and an unbeaten 27 respectively.

In response, the West Indies encountered early challenges but showcased their batting prowess to chase down the target with calculated aggression.

Andre Russell and Alzarri Joseph excelled with the ball for the West Indies, claiming two wickets each, while Akeal Hosein, Romario Shepherd, and Gudakesh Motie contributed with crucial breakthroughs to restrict PNG’s innings.
