NEW YORK: WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, has announced the introduction of a new ‘Image Search’ feature aimed at helping users verify the authenticity of images received through the platform.
This initiative is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to combat misinformation and fake news, which have become increasingly prevalent, especially with the rise of accessible AI tools.
The new feature allows users to search for any image they receive—whether from friends or forwarded messages—directly on the web. By uploading an image to Google, users can find similar images or related sources online, enabling quick verification and reducing the risk of being misled by fake visuals.
In a statement, WhatsApp emphasized the importance of this feature, stating, “In an era where misinformation spreads rapidly, this tool is essential for users to authenticate the content they encounter.”
The company reassured users that privacy would be a top priority, noting that images would remain secure and private, with no storage or processing done by WhatsApp itself.
Currently, the ‘Image Search’ feature is available to users of the beta version for Android (2.24.21.31), which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature to verify links in frequently forwarded messages.
