LONDON: WhatsApp is set to enhance user privacy and interaction with two important updates currently under development. The latest Android beta version of the app, 2.24.18.2, introduces a novel feature—username PINs—along with a new option for resharing status updates.

In an effort to curb unwanted spam, WhatsApp is rolling out a new privacy feature that requires users to set a PIN for their usernames. This PIN, consisting of at least four digits, will be required for individuals who have not previously interacted with the user before they can send a message.

The introduction of this feature aims to significantly reduce unsolicited messages, providing an added layer of security and control for users.

Current conversations with existing contacts will remain unaffected by this new feature. The PIN requirement will only apply to new users trying to initiate contact, ensuring that existing communication channels are preserved.

Currently, there is no confirmed timeline for when the username PIN feature will move beyond the beta phase. Given WhatsApp’s typical development cycle, it may not be available to all users until later in the year.

Furthermore, WhatsApp is also working on a feature that allows users to reshare status updates where they have been mentioned. This upcoming feature is designed to streamline the process of sharing content and improve user engagement.

The “Reshare Status Updates” functionality will add a new button to the status update interface, enabling users to easily reshare updates where they have been tagged or mentioned. This addition will simplify the sharing process, eliminating the need for users to take screenshots or request the original sharer to send the media directly.
