ISLAMABAD: WhatsApp users across Pakistan have reported widespread service disruptions, including difficulties in downloading audio, video messages, and pictures. Users have encountered error messages stating, “Couldn’t download the document. Try again. If the problem keeps happening, try connecting to Wi-Fi.”

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has acknowledged the reports of service interruptions but has downplayed the severity of the situation. According to a PTA spokesperson, the disruptions are likely due to a “technical glitch” rather than a larger systemic issue.

The PTA is working with relevant technical teams to resolve the problem and restore normal service as quickly as possible.

The disruption comes as a significant inconvenience to the approximately 52.3 million WhatsApp users in Pakistan. Users across the country have expressed frustration over the inability to access multimedia messages and other features, which are now integral to their daily communication.

Earlier in April, internet users in Pakistan experienced a significant setback due to damage to the fiber optic cable linking Singapore to Pakistan and Europe. The damage occurred in multiple locations near Indonesia, affecting internet access across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
