NEW YORK: WhatsApp users are set to face changes to the backup policy on Google Drive, impacting the free storage limits provided by the tech giant. Previously, Android users enjoyed the convenience of backing up their WhatsApp conversations on Google Drive without affecting their 15GB free data allowance.

However, a recent announcement has revealed that, starting in the first half of 2024, these chat backups will now contribute to users’ Google Drive storage limits.

The alteration implies that individuals who rely on Google Drive to safeguard their WhatsApp memories and conversations will need to reconsider their storage strategy, potentially exploring additional options such as Google One subscriptions. This change aligns Android practices with the existing storage limitations on iPhone’s iCloud.

Google One, the subscription service associated with Google Drive, offers three main plans on both monthly and annual bases. For those committing annually, the Basic (100GB) plan is priced at £15.99 / $19.99, the Standard (200GB) plan at £24.99 / $29.99, and the Premium (2TB) plan at £79.99 / $99.99.

However, for users hesitant to opt for a Google One subscription, there are alternative strategies to manage storage effectively. Given that photos consume a significant portion of storage, WhatsApp users can navigate to Settings, proceed to Storage and Data, and select Manage Storage. Here, WhatsApp provides various options to reduce storage usage, allowing users to maximize their free 15GB allocation without incurring additional costs.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp is also actively working on a new feature that aims to enable users to connect with each other without disclosing their phone numbers, introducing an additional layer of privacy to the messaging platform.
