Using white cane to detect obstacles
Jabbar briefed that the two-touch technique involves using the white cane to detect obstacles and changes in terrain. In contrast, the three-touch process involves using the cane to detect obstacles on the ground and at head and waist level. “The dots technique works using a raised dot system to mark specific landmarks and locations,” he noted.
The expert further highlighted the importance of mental optimization when using the white cane, saying that the tool can significantly enhance mobility and requires a certain level of mental concentration and focus to use it effectively.
He said, “This is why individuals who use the white cane should also engage in mental exercises to enhance their cognitive abilities and improve their use.”
He stressed that using the white cane should not be viewed as a sign of weakness or incapability but rather as a tool that enables individuals to navigate their surroundings with greater ease and independence.
He said National Mobility and Independence Training Center organizes particular training segments for individuals with visual impairments and their families. He noted the training center provides various facilities, including 15 days of accommodation.
