WHO Chief Confirms Major Hospital in Gaza, No Longer Functioning as Medical Facility

ISTANBUL: Director-General World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has confirmed that Al-Shifa Hospital in the war-hit Gaza Strip has ceased to operate as a medical facility amid Israeli bombing.

Tedros in a post on a social media platform X, formally twitter, said regrettably, the facility is not functioning as a hospital anymore.

He said the world cannot stand silent while hospitals, which should be safe havens, are transformed into scenes of death, devastation and despair.

Stressing the dire and perilous situation at the hospital, he said that for the past three days, the hospital has lacked electricity and water and has poor internet connectivity that severely hamperr its ability to provide medical care.

Number of deaths increases significantly in Gaza-strip

He said the number of deaths has increased significantly reiterating his call for a cease-fire in the Gaza-strip.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the WHO has managed to get in touch with health professionals at the Al-Shifa hospital.

He added the constant gunfire and bombings in the area have aggravated the already critical circumstances.

According to media reports two more main hospitals in Gaza closed to new injured and patients on Sunday, with staff adding that Israeli airstrikes plus lack of medicine and fuel meant more babies, children and others could die.

Al-Quds and Al Shifa hospitals said that they were going to suspend operations.

Palestinian officials said in a statement that more than 11,078 Gaza residents have also been killed in air and artillery attacks since October 7, about 40 percent of them children. Locals reported increased fighting near Al-Shati refugee camp, by the shore in northern Gaza.
