WHO Issues Alert Over 66 Children Deaths in Gambia Related to Indian Cough Syrups

By Ismail Khalid

Islamabad: The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global warning against Indian cough syrup linked to the deaths of 66 children in The Gambia.

The Indian firm, Maiden Pharmaceuticals, is yet to comment on the issue. The syrup may be associated with acute kidney damage and death in 66 children. The Gambian officials identified four products, but they “may have been distributed, through informal markets, to other countries or regions,” the WHO added.

The WHO said that laboratory analysis of samples of the products confirmed that they contained contaminants. The Gambian government has since stopped using all paracetamol syrups and encouraged people to switch to tablets.
