The shortest day of the year falls on December 21 or 22 every year in the Northern Hemisphere. This year, the winter solstice falls on December 22, 2022. In the winter, the days get shorter, and the nights get longer, but today will be the shortest day and the longest night of the year.

According to the Meteorological Department, the night between December 21 and 22 will be the longest night of the year, and today will be the shortest day, with the sun setting at five past one. Keep in mind that after December 21, nights will start getting shorter and days longer, and June 21 will be the longest day and shortest night of the year.
