SKARDU: Gilgit Baltistan on Thursday announced that the Sarfaranga Cold Desert Jeep Rally 2023 will kick off on October 6 in the Shigar district and run for three days.

During a press conference held at a local hotel, Commissioner Najeeb Alam shared that this year’s rally will feature several new activities, including the participation of women in motorsports. The rally’s route has been extended to cover a distance of 80 kilometers, with more than 100 local and international racers set to take part, including female racers.

The commissioner also mentioned that Pak Wheel will be responsible for handling technical arrangements, while various government departments, including tourism, will collaborate to ensure the event’s success. Additionally, the rally will feature stalls showcasing local food and handmade products over the course of the three-day event.

Commissioner Najeeb Alam encouraged local media to actively promote the international desert rally as a means to introduce Baltistan and its four districts to a wider audience. He emphasized that such exposure would attract investment, boost tourism, promote expedition and trekking sports, stimulate the hotel and restaurant business, and enhance transportation in the region.

During the rally, attendees can look forward to local music performances, sword dances, polo matches, and competitions involving Zakh, which are locally crafted raft boats. Deputy Commissioner Shigar, Waliullah, also announced that entry to the event will be free for the public.
