WASHINGTON: World Bank President David Malpass said on Wednesday that he plans to quit by the middle of this year.  David Malpass informed the World Bank that he will depart by June 30 of the current year.

He oversaw the World Bank’s response to crises including covid-19, Ukraine war, food and energy shortages during his tenure. This will give an opportunity to US President Joe Biden to pick someone to give more attention to fight climate change. He was appointed to lead the World Bank in 2019 by former US President Donald Trump.

David Malpass said in congressional testimony in 2017 that the World Bank-like institutions “spend huge money” but are not very effective. He had worked as an economic adviser to Donald Trump’s presidential drive in 2016.

Activists of Climate have been demanding to remove Malpass from the position of World Bank President for what they (activists) called an insufficient approach to the crisis of climate.

Activists have pressed him to quit his position as head of Word Bank after he was asked to comment on remarks of Ex-US vice President Al Gore that he (Malpass) was a climate change denier.

Malpass declined several times to comment if he believed man-made emissions were warming the earth, saying that he was not a scientist.

Malpass departure would give Biden’s administration an opportunity to select a candidate who can oversee the push of the World Bank’s reforms.

US former Treasury official Clemence Landers said that this is a surprise and noted that the announcement is 14 months earlier.
