PARIS: The world is observing international world press Freedom Day as 92 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 7.   According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 97 journalists including 92 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza war since the conflict erupted in October 7.

On the other hand, Palestinian journalists covering the Gaza conflict have been honoured with the 2024 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.  This esteemed recognition comes following the endorsement of an International Jury comprised of media professionals. The Award Ceremony was held within the framework of the World Press Freedom Conference in Santiago, Chile.

Mauricio Weibel, chairing the international jury, conveyed solidarity with Palestinian journalists amidst the crisis, emphasising their valour in covering such harrowing circumstances. Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO, commended their courage, underscoring the prize’s tribute to journalists navigating perilous environments to uphold freedom of expression.
