HANOI: In an effort to strengthen ties and counterbalance US influence, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a crucial visit to Hanoi, marking his first trip to Vietnam in six years. During the two-day visit, both nations affirmed their commitment to deeper cooperation by signing over 30 agreements, including a pivotal pledge to enhance rail links between the two countries.
President Xi emphasized the need for vigilance against any efforts to disrupt stability in the Asia-Pacific region, urging China and Vietnam to stand united. His statements, as reported by China’s official state news agency Xinhua, underscored the importance of strengthening coordination and cooperation in international affairs to maintain a positive external environment.
In a joint statement, China and Vietnam expressed their commitment to “continue to deepen and increase bilateral relations.” They highlighted the creation of a “community with a shared future” and deemed the visit a “historic landmark” contributing to peace, stability, and development in the region and the world.
Xi Assures Vietnam of China’s Support
President Xi assured Vietnam of China’s readiness to collaborate on finding long-term solutions to maritime issues, including support for the development of a “substantive and effective Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.”
During the visit, President Xi paid respects to revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh by laying a wreath at his mausoleum. Additionally, he held meetings with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President Vo Van Thuong.
Prime Minister Chinh affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to supporting China’s strong development, recognizing its role as a major country with significant contributions to the international community. Chinh further expressed support for President Xi Jinping’s initiatives aimed at fostering global peace, cooperation, and development.
