BEIJING: In a diplomatic encounter, Chinese leader Xi Jinping met with the former US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, on Thursday, as reported by state media.

The meeting took place at the Diaoyutai State Guest House, where the 100-year-old statesman was warmly acknowledged for his pivotal role in fostering diplomatic relations between China and the United States during the 1970s.

Back in July 1971, Kissinger, then serving as the US national security advisor, clandestinely journeyed to Beijing on a mission of profound significance: to establish relations with the communist-led nation. This secretive trip laid the foundation for a historic visit by President Richard Nixon, who aimed to recalibrate the dynamics of the Cold War and seek assistance in ending America’s involvement in the Vietnam War, according to local media.

The United States’ overture to an isolated Beijing not only transformed international politics but also significantly contributed to China’s ascent as a manufacturing powerhouse and ultimately the world’s largest economy, second only to the United States.

Throughout the years, Kissinger’s ties with China have remained strong. Having visited the country over 100 times since 1971, the distinguished diplomat’s relationship with China has transcended time and political changes. Notably, this visit holds additional significance, as it marks Kissinger’s first return to China since celebrating his 100th birthday on May 27th of this year, an event that garnered widespread recognition, including the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.

In his post-political career, Kissinger has leveraged his extensive knowledge and expertise to advise businesses on matters concerning China. Notably, he has voiced concerns about the potential consequences of adopting a hawkish approach to US policy towards China.

The meeting between Xi Jinping and Henry Kissinger exemplifies the enduring significance of diplomatic engagements in shaping the course of international relations. Both leaders, through their illustrious careers, have played pivotal roles in the intricate tapestry of China-US relations. As the world continues to evolve, such interactions between key figures remain integral to promoting understanding, cooperation, and harmony between nations.
