SANAA, Yemen: Yemen’s Houthi group on Wednesday said they conducted a missile and drone attack targeting the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and accompanying warships in the northern Red Sea.

In a televised statement, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the attack involved several cruise missiles and drones, saying the attack successfully hit its targets.  He added the attack was in response to what he called the US Navy’s attempts to target Yemen.

This was the sixth attack by the Houthis on the US carrier within a month.  “This is the sixth strike on the carrier since it entered the Red Sea nearly a month ago,” Saree said, without giving further details.

The American military declined to confirm whether its forces had come under fire, the AFP reported.

Since the war in Gaza started between Israel and Hamas in October 2023, the Yemeni group has repeatedly carried out missiles and drones at ships in the Red Sea and at targets in Israel in what they say is a show of solidarity with the Palestinians.

Last week, the Houthis also asserted they had targeted the USS Harry Truman in the Red Sea, with the attack reportedly lasting nine hours.

The United States and Britain have repeatedly targeted Houthis, while Israel has also carried out attacks in Houthi-controlled areas.

In recent weeks, Houthis have claimed to have fired several missiles at Israel. Israel also launched heavy air strikes on different areas of Yemen including strategic assets and key infrastructure.

Houthis have stepped up their attacks since November’s ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
