ISLAMABAD/TOKYO: Sky Brown, the youngest British prodigy, won her maiden global title in park skateboarding on Sunday at the Skateboarding World Championships thanks to a stunning performance.
The 14-year-old won the bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships and the Tokyo Olympics and is now Britain’s first skateboarding world champion. She was the youngest medalist for Great Britain at the Olympics.
In the United Arab Emirates, she performed a Kickflip Indy on her second run at the Aljada Skate Park in Sharjah. She finished it with a frontside 540 and received a score of 89.63, which she improved on during her third run when she received a score of 90.83, and the winner had already been determined.
With her gold, Brown also qualified for next year’s Olympics championship
The Championships also offer ranking points for Olympic qualification. With her gold, Brown also gets maximum points towards qualification for next year’s Olympics in Paris. The best-placed American was Bryce Wettstein, who finished fifth with 84.40 points.
Olympic champion Sakura Yosozumi finished third with a score of 85.15, followed by Olympic silver winner Kokona Hiraki who scored 86.66. Sakura Yosozumi tripped in her second run.
“It’s crazy to be on the podium once more with these people. It’s encouraging to see new girls crushing it. Afterward, according to Olympics.com, Brown stated, “I’m stoked. It has simply been enjoyable. I made an effort to take in every last bit of it. It felt fantastic to complete all three of my runs. Since all the girls are currently crazy, I was in the dark until the very end.
When Brown was three years old, she started skateboarding under her father’s supervision, learning tricks on YouTube before participating in Great Britain’s skateboarding program.
She suffered a life-threatening injury in May 2020 when, while training, she fell 15 feet on hard ground and fractured her skull, breaking her left wrist and hand and causing lacerations to her lungs and stomach.
