KYIV, Ukraine: On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a direct appeal to US President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping to participate in an upcoming peace summit in Switzerland, aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“I am appealing to the leaders of the world who are still aside from the global efforts of the global peace summit: to President Biden, the leader of the United States, and to President Xi, the leader of China,” Zelensky stated in a video address.

Zelensky urged both leaders to “support the peace summit with your personal leadership and participation,” stressing that “the efforts of the global majority are the best guarantee that all commitments will be fulfilled.”

The summit is scheduled to take place in Lucerne on June 15-16. The Swiss government has extended invitations to 160 delegations, but notably, Russia will not be attending.

Zelensky announced that “more than 80 countries confirmed they will come,” reflecting significant international backing for the summit. The presence of Biden and Xi, representing two of the world’s most powerful nations, is seen as pivotal to advancing the peace process.
