KYIV: President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday said Ukraine and the European Commission will soon evaluate Kyiv’s progress on aligning its legislation as European Union talks for accession likely to take place in the next spring.

In his nightly video address, he said that the EU leaders have decided at a summit to start formal membership talks with Ukraine. The country is facing uncertainty over the future of vital foreign assistance, especially from the United States.

Zelensky said Ukraine will officially launch the process of assessing its legislation for compliance with EU.

He said the country is also preparing for the work on the negotiating framework that could take place in the spring.

Belgium offered Ukraine candidate status four months after Russia’s February 2022 war, prompting a rush by Kyiv authorities to reform priority areas identified by the European Commission.

The commission last month reported that Kyiv had fulfilled four of its seven obligations, including hiring of anti-corruption officials, judiciary overhaul and aligning media lawmaking with EU standards.

The commission said it would evaluate Ukraine’s progress again in March, part of a long and complicated path to Kyiv’s membership to the EU.
