BRUSSELS: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for enhanced weapons supplies during his first visit to NATO headquarters since the onset of Russia’s relentless war. He specifically appealed for air defense systems, long-range missiles, and ammunition, expressing concerns that the recent Hamas attack on Israel could divert the attention of key supporter, the United States, away from the conflict in Ukraine.

We are preparing, we are ready. Now we need some support from the leaders. That’s why I’m here today, President Zelensky asserted, highlighting the gravity of the situation for Ukraine as winter approaches.

The international allies of Kyiv convened to discuss arms deliveries, focusing on bolstering Ukraine’s counter-offensive and providing essential air defenses to fortify against an anticipated winter onslaught by Russia. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg assured Ukraine of unwavering support, underlining its critical importance to the entire NATO alliance.

Zelensky voiced his apprehensions that the crisis in Israel might divert attention from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He urged the Western nations to stand with the Israeli people, drawing parallels to the support Ukraine received after Russia’s invasion last year.

The United States has sought to reassure that the decision to step up military support for Israel after the surprise assault by Hamas will not harm Washington’s ability to keep arming Ukraine, the article highlighted, emphasizing the U.S.’s commitment to maintaining military assistance to Ukraine despite other pressing concerns.

Ukraine’s aspirations to become a NATO member were underscored, highlighting the nation’s eagerness to secure long-term stability in the face of Moscow’s aggression. While NATO has simplified Ukraine’s path to membership, a clear invitation or deadline for Ukraine’s accession was not provided during the recent summit.
