KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday that Kyiv’s plan to defeat Russia in the ongoing conflict largely depended on the United States’s support, speaking as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Kyiv.

In a press conference held during Blinken’s visit, Zelensky stated, “As for the plan for victory… it depends mostly on the support of the United States. And other partners.”

Blinken’s visit to Kyiv is part of ongoing US diplomatic engagement with Ukraine, aimed at reinforcing American backing and addressing Ukraine’s strategic needs. The timing of Zelensky’s remarks is particularly poignant as the US approaches its presidential election in November, which could potentially alter the dynamics of US support for Ukraine.

There is concern among Ukrainian officials about the possibility of former President Donald Trump returning to the White House. Trump aides have suggested that if he wins, he might use US aid as leverage to push Ukraine into making territorial concessions to Russia.

Trump’s potential strategy could shift US support away from its current robust stance, adding uncertainty to Ukraine’s future plans.

Zelensky has said he will outline a plan to end the war with Russia by November.

He said that a surprise incursion by Ukrainian troops into Russia’s Kursk region allowed Ukraine to enter potential peace talks from a position of strength.

Ukraine organized a peace summit in June in Switzerland with leaders and top officials from over 90 countries but did not invite Russia.

Zelensky has since said Russia should be included in the next gathering.

Russia has ruled out peace talks since the assault in Kursk and has demanded Ukraine cede swathes of territory for a potential ceasefire.
