HARARE: A devastating collapse at an informal gold mine near Chegutu, approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of Harare, has resulted in the loss of three lives, with 18 individuals feared trapped beneath the debris, according to state television reports on Saturday.

The incident occurred at the Bay Horse Mine, a site notorious for its informal mining activities. State broadcaster ZBC confirmed that three bodies have been recovered from the collapsed shaft during a search operation conducted by government officials with the aid of local artisanal miners. The victims were found beneath heavy rocks, highlighting the dangerous conditions in which these miners operate.

Zimbabwe, a nation rich in resources including platinum, diamonds, gold, coal, and copper, has witnessed a surge in illegal mining activities, primarily driven by the economic challenges faced by many citizens. These informal mining operations often occur in perilous conditions, leading to frequent accidents.

Incidents in Zimbabwe Gold Mining Industry

The latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures within the country’s mining industry. The government has struggled to curb these illegal practices, leading to a rise in incidents similar to the recent collapse. In February 2019, Zimbabwe faced a grim mining disaster when 24 miners lost their lives in a flooded abandoned pit due to torrential rains in the central region.

Rescue efforts are currently underway, with authorities and local miners working tirelessly to locate and save the 18 individuals still missing beneath the debris. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with illegal mining and the importance of enforcing regulations to protect the lives of those working in the industry.
