Former US Legislator Says Israeli Airstrike Kills His Relatives in Gaza

WASHINGTON:  Former member of the US House of Representative Justin Amash has said that several of his relatives were killed when a Greek Orthodox church in the Gaza Strip was attacked by Israel, Western media reported on Friday. He wrote via his social media and said that several of his relatives were killed in Gaza and expressed sympathy with civilians in the region.

Palestinian authorities said as many as 500 Muslims and Christians took refuge from Israeli attacks in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Porphyrius, and the health ministry in Gaza said sixteen were killed by Israeli airstrike.

In a statement, the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem denounced the airstrike on Church.

Amash is a Palestinian-American, represented Michigan as a Republican in the House of Representatives between 2011 to 2021. He is a vocal critic of Donald Trump, Amash left the Republican party in 2019 and later announced to join the Libertarian Party.

The Health Ministry in Gaza said over 4,137 people have been martyred and over 14,000 injured in Gaza since the war started, most of them children and women. Health officials said that over 1,000 people were believed buried under debris of the buildings. Over 1,400 people in Israel have also been killed during the war with Hamas.
