ALGIERS: Amid the ongoing political crisis in neighboring Niger, Algeria has presented a crucial proposal aimed at resolving the situation. The proposal advocates for a six-month transition period, led by a civilian authority, to navigate through the crisis, Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf said.

Attaf, who recently concluded a diplomatic tour of West African states, revealed that the proposed initiative garnered positive feedback from various countries. Notably, the majority of the nations engaged in discussions were opposed to military intervention as a means to resolve the crisis.

The political turmoil in Niger emerged when members of the presidential guard assumed control of the government, forming a junta. Last week, West African army chiefs convened under the banner of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Ghana to deliberate potential solutions, including the prospect of military intervention.

Contrasting this approach, Algeria steadfastly expressed its opposition to military intervention, citing the instability that followed NATO’s intervention in Libya during the 2011 uprising against Muammar Qaddafi’s regime.

Points of Algeria’s Proactive Response

A Six-Month Transition: The initiative proposes a six-month transition period, led by a civilian authority, to pave the way for a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

Diplomatic Engagement: Algeria’s officials have engaged in dialogue with the Niger military leader, who has expressed interest in a transitional period lasting up to three years.

United Nations Conference: Algeria seeks the convening of a United Nations conference aimed at reinstating constitutional order within Niger.

Guarantees for All Parties: The proposal advocates for guarantees that encompass the interests of all stakeholders involved in the crisis.

Sahel Development Conference: Algeria envisions hosting a conference focused on development in the Sahel region, fostering broader regional cooperation.

While the initiative underscores Algeria’s commitment to avoiding military intervention, it also emphasizes diplomatic solutions and international cooperation. Recent reports indicating that France had sought Algeria’s permission for a potential military operation in Niger were refuted by both Algeria and France.
