PESHAWAR: The government in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will distribute two-kilowatt solar panels free of charge to poor families to provide relief to consumers facing skyrocketing electricity bills and energy crisis in the province.

Advisor to the Chief Minister on Finance Muzammil Aslam said in an interview with international media that the province plans to distribute 100,000 solar systems to needy households.

“In addition to the solar panels, the government will provide electric wires and inverter fans as part of the package,” he said.

Aslam highlighted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has already established over 90 power plants across the province, producing electricity at a cost of six to seven rupees per unit.

“While Wapda charges Rs 27 per unit for electricity supply, our initiative aims to establish the province’s own electricity transmission network,” he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Punjab government had launched a ‘Roshan Gharana’ programme, in which electricity consumers using up to 500 units across the province will be able to get solar panels in easy instalments.

The scheme will provide solar panels to consumers using up to 500 units of electricity, with the government bearing 90 percent of the total cost and the consumer paying the remaining 10 percent.
