PYONGYANG: North Korea on Monday denounced the “hostile forces inside and outside Syria” for a drone attack last week that caused many casualties in the country, calling it a terrorist attempt to overthrow the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The assault occurred during a graduation ceremony at a military academy in the Homs region on October 5, marking one of the deadliest strikes against the military in over 12 years of civil war.

Quoting a spokesperson from North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, state media KCNA reported on Monday that the recent act of terrorism was a result of the actions of hostile entities within and outside Syria, with intentions to overthrow the legitimate government of Syria.

Highlighting the diplomatic relations between North Korea and Syria, it was noted that in November of the previous year, President Assad swore in a new ambassador to North Korea. This event signified the continuation of a longstanding history of ties between the two nations, both of which have faced diplomatic isolation, with Syria enduring a decade of Western sanctions.
