LAHORE: Three Pakistani sisters made history in powerlifting by winning four gold medals each in different weight categories in South Africa.

Despite an injury, Twinkle Sohail excelled in the 84 kg class, securing gold in the squat, bench press, deadlift, and overall total categories. Her sisters, Veronica Sohail and Sybil Sohail, also claimed four gold medals each in their respective weight categories. This achievement marks the first time three sisters have simultaneously won gold medals in an international powerlifting competition.

Following their victory in South Africa, the sisters are set to compete in the “equipped” event on Saturday. Punjab’s Provincial Sports Minister Faisal Khokhar praised the Sohail sisters for their outstanding achievement, noting that the Sports Board Punjab funded their travel expenses and provided uniforms.

Powerlifting is a strength sport focused on three primary lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Athletes compete in designated weight categories, aiming to lift the maximum weight in each lift. Competitions allow three attempts per lift, with judges ensuring lifts meet rigorous standards for completion. Mastering the correct technique is essential for effective performance and injury prevention.

In powerlifting competitions, lifters earn a cumulative score by recording their best successful lifts across the three categories. The lifter with the highest total score in their weight class is declared the winner.
